Wine & Cheese ~ 78th Serving

wine n cheeseWelcome to Wine & Cheese, my weekly, Wednesday whine session.

Every week on Wednesday I devote a blog to whining. Despite being a really happy, positive person, I do have things that annoy me at times.

I never let anything grate on my nerves for long but thought it would be fun to vent them periodically in my blogs.

I also feel that good things, the cheese in life, should be acknowledged as well.

I’m even going to throw in a bit of dessert, a piece of virtual chocolate, something that made me laugh or smile just a bit more than normal.

If you’d like to read the past editions of Wine & Cheese just click HERE for all of the past postings.

Sit back and join me now for the 78th serving of some wine and cheese!

WINE

😦  I am ready to find Skyler kitten a new home.  Okay not really, but I’ve about reached the end of my rope.  I get that she is just a kitten and therefore more curious and mischievous than an adult cat, but she has a mean streak too, she likes to bite me, hard.  And her favorite pastime is trashing the one Christmas tree.  Well, when she isn’t on the kitchen counter knocking things off.  I’m positive she is going to hell too, because she got into the nativity and tossed baby Jesus and the 3 Wise Men out and on the floor.

😦  At the moment it sure isn’t looking like a White Christmas is on order for our area.  This is the one and only time I’m crazy about snow.  Don’t need a lot, just a few inches to wake up to on Christmas morning to set the mood.  Instead it looks as if it will be just dry and cold.  I’m not happy.  Time to get all the kiddos wearing their jammies inside out and backward and all those other crazy superstitions they have for snow.

😦  I think that I am again getting a cold.  I’m so tired of blowing my nose and having sniffles.

CHEESE

🙂  I have had the opportunity to work from home more lately.  I love this!  Not only is it a big savings on gas, but I actually do better work when I am home, alone, in the quiet.  My coffee pot close by, oils for the diffuser or my favorite candles.  I love it.

🙂  I wasn’t sure I would like it, but I’m starting to have fun with Instagram!  It’s actually a rather enjoyable app.

🙂  I not only worked from home today, I managed to get 3 loads of laundry done, and make a kick-butt dinner as well, all while rocking the job.

🙂  It’s not quite 8pm and I’m done with everything I needed to accomplish today.  That means a book, my tea, and my jammies are on deck now. WOOHOO!

Snow Day Coffee Musings

Coffee cup with steam“Snow is a great equalizer. It softens rough edges, hides ugly imperfections under its pristine cloak, quiets the harshness of sound. Traveling in it gives us all the same struggle (& a little sense of adventure) as we forge our way. That’s why I love the snow!” ~ Mary Herling Manifold

When I saw that this morning I loved it and asked Mary if I could quote her today in my blog post.  She is one of my many cousins on my dad’s side that I grew up with playing under grandma and grandpa’s dining room table while the adults sat around it telling stories we all remember well to this day.  Some very fond memories from that time.  I’m so thankful for Facebook as it has kept us all in touch when our family yahoo group turned in to a political soap box.

It is snowing this morning again, looks like we might have picked up another inch or  two.  Fresh covering over all of the foot prints and sled tracks on the hill in back, and the trees are all covered again.  So beautiful to sit in here and look at with my coffee in hand, Christmas trees all lit up and music playing.  I love working from home, I get so much more done this way.  Doesn’t hurt that I love my home!

Yesterday I made a decision that I have been pondering for several weeks.  In November of 2010, I had started another blog page for my faith, This Broken Angel – A Prodigal Daughter’s Return To Her Faith.  It isn’t that my faith isn’t woven into my life, or that I am in some way ashamed and want to hide it.  But not everyone believes as I do, or wants to read about that.  It can get kind of deep and The Musings Of Marvelous Martha is not faith focused, it’s about the crazy life I am living and not sure this makes any sense but the two are linked.  Sometimes I will reblog a post from there to this page but if you are at all interested you can skip on over there and follow it too.  Oops, hijacked myself.  The decision was if I was going to brush the dust off of that page and keep it, actually posting to it, or just let it go.  I decided that it will help me to stay focused daily on my walk so it is all cleaned up with a new look and I’m posting on it again.  Even bought the URL as when you invest money in something you tend to apply more effort.  🙂  And when you invest your time, you tend to put more time and effort into the task, it all feeds off itself and grows.

I just noticed I have 57 emails in my direct sales inbox for my 3 direct sales businesses.  I swear they mate and multiply over night sometimes.  Oh well no big deal. I will get to them later today.

You know what I love? This sounds nutty, but the smell of the carpets being cleaned!  Right now mine are being cleaned as I sit here.  If you are in the greater Cincinnati area, I recommend Blue Sky Carpet Cleaning.  They do residential and commercial and they rock!  6 rooms and a hallway for $99 right now.  You can’t beat that and who doesn’t want nice looking rugs for the holidays?  🙂  Not sure what the deodorizer is they use but it smells great.  With 3 cats and a dog, I may do this every 4-6 months.  They are a small, local business, 859-307-5690.  Support small, local businesses!!!

Hmm…my coffee cup is empty, time for a new pot of coffee.  And then back to work as soon as the carpet cleaners are finished. (I’m now standing at the kitchen counter with my laptop working and watching my carpets look AMAZING.  🙂

#3 ~ My Daughter

This wish is all about my baby girl.

I wish for her faith in God to grow from the seeds planted in her heart as she grew up in a loving church family, and that she would learn from the mistakes she saw her parents make, keeping instead her focus on the Lord.  I pray she develops a strong love for God’s Word, and finds time for it each day.

I wish for her to find a man who is strong in character, morals and loyalty.  One who will love her faithfully, be a good father to her children, and be a man of God.  A strong believer with a solid faith who will love her as scripture says he should, putting her ahead of himself.

I wish for her all the little boys she so very much wants for children, and that they too would have a faith that is strong and unwavering, and grow up to be her pride and joy, as she and her brother are mine.

I wish for her to have a home full of love and laughter, and enough critters to keep her animal loving side happy and content.

And like her big brother, I wish for her, “just enough”.

Seen as part of a post on another day, entitled “Just Enough”. Author unknown.

“I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.

I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.

I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.

I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.

I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.

I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.

I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.

Day 1 ~ 30 Days Of Thankfulness 2012

I’m thankful for my childhood.  I was richly blessed with a close family, relatively normal by most definitions.  2 brothers and 1 sister, and great parents.  My memories are extensive ones from growing up, traveling the country. We camped all over and I’ve seen SO many things thanks to those vacations.  Memories of singing around the campfire at night, cherry pies made with pie filling, bread and an iron pie maker over the fire, marshmallows and family.  Christmas trees falling over when 4 kids were running through the house, building snowmen in winter, roller skating in summer…the list is just endless.

For the wonderful memories, of a wonderful childhood, with a wonderful family…I am very thankful!

WINE

😦   They’re BAACCCKKKK! Those random hot flashes of edging into the menopausal years of life.  I am far less than thrilled.  I get them in spurts, and currently I seem to be within a phase of said self contained tropical climate outbursts, as out of no where I am suddenly so hot that I could defrost a walk-in freezer.

😦  Dust.  I totally dislike dust.  I wish I could blame the cats but even in the marital residence there was an excessive amount of dust, even if we went at it daily.  I wish I had a solution but I don’t.  One furnace was new with great filters etc, one is probably older than dirt.  This just sucks.

😦  Open windows draw cats.  See, windows are kitty cat television.  And an open window is way, high end viewing as the sound is enhanced and there is fresh air.  Hot flashes = open windows next to me even when it is very cold outside.  Open windows = cats sitting on the edge of my desk which = cat hair on the desk, as the little floozies feel the need to bathe themselves in the fresh air of the open window, leaving behind fur.  Dust, cat hair, hot flashes…I cannot win!

CHEESE

🙂  I have a new coffee cup.  It is white  outside, PINK inside (instant love) and says JOY in big, pink letters outside.  In the background it says Joy in light pink letters…oh heck I’ll just show you a picture.  I love this cup.  It was time to retire the mug with the cat on it from the Count.  I won’t get rid of it, just not going to use it for now.

I follow the My One Word idea rather than New Year’s resolutions.  Last year my word was SEEK..as I was seeking my way back to God.  I was searching and praying for a word for 2012 and when I received the coffee cup as a gift, I knew my word for 2012 is JOY.  Finding JOY in the Lord first, and then in all things in life, as I believe there is a silver lining of JOY in all things.

🙂  Hee hee…knowing where the last of the Christmas tree cookies are hidden, all 4 of them, and  making them into my breakfast because I’m the only Diva awake in the house.  Waahaahaa!

🙂  Looking ahead to the new year, planning and writing down my goals, plotting a course toward them.  All the purging I am doing is helping me to focus on what I am keeping in my life and what I can do with it.  And not taking ‘no’ or ‘can’t’ as an option.  I can. I will.

🙂  Embracing being a single woman, REALLY  embracing it and all that it means.  It’s truly all about me this coming year and I’m going to make the most of it and run with it.  Male friends are fine, and going out now and then is fine, but this year I want to focus on ME.  Just me, no ‘us’ but just ME.

12. Do you like Fruitcake?
13. What are you most excited about the holidays?
14. Do you open presents Christmas Eve or Christmas Morning?
15. Will you still be wrapping presents on Christmas Eve?
—————————————————————

1.  Wrapping paper or gift bags?

Both!  Depends what it is, how big it is etc.  Odd shaped things just go better in bags.

2.  Real or artificial tree?

Artificial.  I was married to a fire fighter both times I was married.  I had a real one until the year my son was born, then after seeing a video on how fast a tree goes up and how fast the fire  multiplied I wasn’t comfortable having real with a baby in the house.  After that pre-lit trees hit the market and the fact that I like to put it up the day after Thanksgiving (if not way sooner) artificial became the way to go.  Now, here in the Diva Den with mom, my sister and nieces, we have a huge house so we have 2 trees, one in the living room and one in the family room.

3.  When do you put your tree up?

Either the day after Thanksgiving or sometime the week before.  I love Christmas and cannot get enough of it.  This year, because we had a holiday open house with our Avon business and that stuff is out early, it was actually up 2 days before Halloween.  🙂  A record for us!

4.  When do you take your tree down?

Usually the week after New Year’s Eve.  Personally I’d leave it up all year, call it a ‘holiday tree’ and decorate it for each holiday throughout the year.  Haven’t had a lot of support around here on that idea.

5.  Do you like eggnog?

Oh yes!  Leaded (spiked) or unleaded.  This time of year the local UDF (United Dairy Farmers) and McDonalds have eggnog shakes, a holiday favorite of mine!

6.  Do you have a nativity scene?

Yes we do!  Growing up was one my dad made, then my kids bought me one for Christmas one year (I got it early) and I still have it.

7.  Favorite Christmas Movie?

Hands down my favorite is “It’s A Wonderful Life”.  Makes me always stop to count my blessings and appreciate the things I have and the things that have happened in my life.  Only the black & white version will do, and it is tradition to watch it on Christmas Eve.  Especially this Christmas, as we are very tight on money and there won’t be much under the tree, we’re focused around here on the fact that all 5 of us are home for the holidays and thankful for our family and friends, things money cannot buy that are truly priceless.

8.  Favorite Christmas Cookie?

OH Christmas trees made from a Mirro cookie press (the OLD ones that are hand cranked).  The recipe is inside the box and it is the best cookie ever!  My son can knock out several dozen in one sitting and that is his favorite as well.

9.  Where  will you eat Christmas dinner?

Right here with my parents, sister and her girls and our future (though to us she already is) sister-in-law and hopefully her daughter.  My son is on duty, so is one of my brothers (cops and firefighters) but hopefully my other brother and my daughter will drift in.  Anyone is welcome to come share the day with us, it is a time for sharing love and we have plenty to go around!

10.  Angel, bow or star on top of your tree?

Well it would be an angel but she isn’t being cooperative and staying put (not that the 3 felines scaling the tree might have anything to do with that) so it’s a bow on both trees.

11.  Most annoying thing about this time of year?

The commercials and attitude of people in stores.  This isn’t about gifts, and even if you don’t celebrate the birth of Christ, it is a time of year to spread joy and love.  I hate the commercials with people giving cars and diamonds etc.  Give me an old fashioned Christmas like on Little House On The Prairie where one gift was it and it was something significant in meaning.

12.  Do you like fruitcake?

Actually yes I do, SOME of them anyway.  There are some that are well not so much but others are yummy with a cup of coffee.

13.  What are you most excited about the holidays?

Just being together, the decorations, the time to reflect on the blessings that are the true gifts we receive each year, and be with my family.

14.  Do you open presents Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

Both!  We have a huge family gathering on my mom’s side where it is on Christmas Eve, though no gifts this year for the first time in my 48 years.  And then as more immediate family in the morning.

15.  Will you still be wrapping presents Christmas Eve?

It wouldn’t be the first time if I was, but this year no it will all be done ahead of time.

If you want to join the fun and come up with four fill in’s of your own, please email them to her at feelingbeachie@gmail.com. If she uses them, she will add you as co-host to the hop!

1.       ____ is my ideal winter night.

2.       I don’t remember the last time I ___ but, I really want to.

3.       I will never turn down __________

4.      To save money I like to ____________

My Answers:

1.  Curled  up with a cup of flavored coffee, in front of the fireplace in the family room with the other Divas (mom, sister, 2 nieces) laughing and watching TV while I crochet a blanket is my ideal winter night.  For now, as I’m not in a relationship with anyone of the male side of the species.

2.  I don’t remember the last time I heard my son play the bagpipes but, I really want to!  He plays the highland pipes and is in the Cincinnati Emerald Society. He used to play with the Sheriff’s dept. pipe band but being on road patrol he really doesn’t have the ability to be away for events the department band participates in.  He is getting married on St. Patrick’s Day 2012, maybe he’ll play at the reception….

3.  I will never turn down dark chocolate.  I LOVE it and if it is there in front of me, I’m going to eat it.  Life is too short to worry about a few extra calories, especially if it happens to be an Esther Price dark chocolate candy, YUM!

4.  To save money I like to invite people over with food and drinks to watch football games.  While I enjoy the game in a sports bar full of cheering fans, or a good seat at the game with 65,000 screaming fans, I prefer to save money and enjoy the games with friends and family at home.  Not to mention the bathroom is clean and has no line.

Welcome to Five Question Friday!! You’ve come to the right place if you want a fun, easy post or if you’ve suddenly discovered your muses have been Christmas baking and are covered in flour and chocolate.
Rules for 5QF: Copy and paste the following questions to your blog post, answer them, then watch for the linky post to appear Friday morning and LINK UP!
Oh, and remember (pay close attention…this is the important one)…HAVE FUN!
1. What’s the best Christmas present you’ve ever received?

2. Worst/Funniest White Elephant gift ever received?

3. Is your Christmas tree plain and simple (white lights and matching ornaments) or is it wild and crazy (colored lights with lots of ornaments collected over the years)?

4. “How” do you iron your clothes? The old fashioned iron/ironing board way, the shower, back in the dryer, etc.

5. How much baking do you do for Christmas and what are your “must make” items? (I’m looking for recipes here, peeps…)

———————————————

1.  What’s the best Christmas present you’ve ever received?

Wow, that would have to be the I received and gave to someone else.  I gave a child up for adoption at 16yo.  She was born the day after Christmas and was just beautiful.  I knew I was just a kid and not ready to be a mom, and that on a waiting list somewhere was a couple that desperately wanted a daughter.  Giving her life and giving someone else that life to have as their own changed me in many ways that I cannot even begin to explain, all good though.  Sometimes the best gift is the one you give to another.

2.  Worst/Funniest White Elephant gift ever received?

Wow this probably sounds crazy, but I’ve never participated in one that I really remember, nothing stands out.  My sister did though, and it was a clock, still in the package, and it didn’t work.  We hung it up for a while, we thought it was amusing.

3.  Is your Christmas tree plain and simple (white lights and matching ornaments) or is it wild and crazy (colored lights with lots of ornaments collected over the years)?

Actually…both. Though the ornaments collected over the years are with my ex husband and daughter in the marital residence on their tree.  When mom, me, my sister and her 2 daughters bought a house and moved in together, last year was our first Christmas here together in The Diva Den.  We have a living room and family room so we put the tree with white lights in the living room.  We have started collecting “girlie” Diva like ornaments (glittery shoes etc) for that tree.  In the family room is the tree with colored lights and a hodge podge of different ornaments.

4.  “How” do you iron your clothes?  The old fashioned iron/ironing board way, the shower, back in the dryer, etc.

Good grief cannot recall the last time I actually ironed something!  Been a few years that is for certain.  Permanent press is my way to iron, so if all else fails it goes back into the dryer for a bit.  If it is something that NEEDS to be iron, the dry cleaners does it cheap enough that I’ll drop it there.

5.  How much baking do you do for Christmas and what are your “must make” items?

I haven’t done holiday baking for many years now.  I have an old Mirro Cookie Press, the kind you build muscles twisting to push out the dough through little cookie forms.  The Christmas trees per the recipe in the box are the one cookie I must make if I’m going to bake.  My son can sit down and eat several dozen in a sitting, he even has been known to ask for them throughout the year.  My daughter will handle that, along with my niece, here in the Diva Den this weekend.  And they’ll make pies. YUM!  However for the most part no one lets me handle sharp objects or use the stove, the local fire boys have to be put on stand-by if I’m cooking/baking.

😦  Week 2 of this sniffles, cold/flu bug thingie.  Okay I AM feeling much better, in fact I feel great!  But my nose just won’t give it up, and I’m sick of blowing it.  I’m single handedly keeping the tissue companies in business and it frankly SUCKS!

😦  Just once I’d love to drink an entire cup of coffee without having to stick it in the microwave half a dozen times.  I pour a cup and the baby I watch poo’s her diaper.  I warm it up and begin to enjoy it again, her nose is running snot candles from her nostrils to her mouth and she needs her sock put back on, toys relocated back within reach and one of the cats is playing soccer with ornaments from the tree…again. Warm it up and the phone rings…you get the idea.

😦  These darn cats are losing their 9 little lives fast!  Well 2 of the cats and it would figure one is mine.  She climbs the Christmas trees (we have 2) and knocks an ornament to the floor at which point the youngest cat starts playing with it.  We redecorate the trees several times a day, they never  look the same twice.  Squirt bottle is pointless, it has become a game to them to see if they can remove an ornament and then dodge the water coming at them.  I give up, they win!

😦  This is the last week I have kids to watch until after Christmas.  They crack us up and make for such a great day, going to miss them over the holidays.

😦  It appears as if my relationship with The Count has come to an end.  This makes me sad.  It hurts.  I’m so tired of having my heart broken.

CHEESE

🙂  While the kids are away  for 2 weeks I’ll have all that time to get out and recruit for my Avon business and seek out new customers.  🙂  🙂  🙂  yes this makes me happy!

🙂  I finally achieved President’s Recognition Club with Avon, having $10,100 in sales.  I managed to achieve this in 19 campaigns with makes me VERY happy.  I also achieved Unit Leader during that time.  I’m moving up and loving it!

🙂  I LOVE all the Christmas music on the radio, and the seasonal music channel on TV, great for the holiday spirit!

🙂  FREE books on Kindle!  I keep finding awesome books to get for my Kindle that are FREE and it rocks my world!

🙂  Fresh pot of coffee brewing…smells SO good.  Surrounded by family that loves me just for ME not who they hope I will be.  I am so blessed and truly happy despite the  heart aches.

Five Question Friday

It’s Five Question Friday, link up and join the fun!

1. Do you have a go to song that always puts you in a good mood?

2. Are you a real Christmas tree kinda person or do you go with a real fake one?

3. What are you thankful for?

4. Which fashion fad from the past do you wish you could wear today?

5. Do you wait until the “low fuel” light comes on before you fill up the gas tank?

——————————————————-
1. Do you have a go to song that always puts you in a good mood?
No, not so much.  There are several songs actually, though just turning on the radio  will usually do the trick.
2.  Are you a real Christmas tree kinda person or do you go with a real fake one?
Having been married to the fire department, back when my first child was born, I go with fake.  I’ve seen too many videos of how fast  live tree goes up in flames to feel safe with one in my house.  Paranoid? Maybe, fire is one of my biggest fears, but I’d rather be overly cautious.
3.  What are you thankful for?
There isn’t anything I am NOT thankful for!  Every blessing and trial make me who I am and I like me a lot!  But this morning, especially thankful for my baby girl, who is busy taking her state board exam for Vet Tech.  Praying extra for her though I have no doubt she will pass this one.
4.  Which fashion fad from the past do you wish you could wear today?
Honestly? None.  Just nothing from back that then I don’t wear that I wish I could.  If I like something, I wear it, and don’t really care what is ‘in’ at the moment.
5.  Do you wait until the “low fuel” light comes on before you fill the gas tank?
Well, yes I do sometimes.  If I have to go anywhere of distance or where I will be sitting in traffic, then no.  Otherwise, I tend to hold out for that light.  Funny thing  is I used to never allow the tank to go below 1/4 before filling it!
